It is becoming more and more common these days especially with the technological advancements in the name of 3D which has only brought out a great amount of distraction among movie makers. They stupidly believe that 3D effects and a few moments of cheap thrills and some eye candy voluptuous female casts would get the viewers to enjoy the movie...

Texas Chainsaw 3D is the best example and I for one fan of the original movie and the sequel watched it as a normal movie at home which even took off what I feel as the only aspect the film crew had focused on.

The story was so bad, clichéd and morbidly boring and watching the characters play and do their roles made me to think that probably the director was trying to give us a SPOOF movie??

Come on man, how stupid can your characters be? A story teller should know his audience. Even kids nowadays do not believe in fairy tales and uncommon, unnatural characterizations.

The sheriff holding a gun up against his chest and just viewing a brutal murder at the climax, the adopted girl writing MURDERERS on the photos of the people who killed a family that was protecting a murderer, and then running away to team up with the chainsaw murderer who even tried to kill her for the majority of the time... how much more ridiculous can it get?

At the end of the movie, I was sad not because it ended... but because I felt deeply insulted as a horror movie fan. And I came to know that this was the first installment of a series from the same team!!! God save the movie watching fraternity.Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-3394359246761378952011-01-02T03:43:00.000-08:002011-01-02T03:43:18.512-08:00Why is it that I just cant get to like some fantasy movies?!?I tried to watch Legend of the Guardians, could not go past half the movie. Maybe I was not focussing, maybe I was not in a mood to watch a movie. But on a Saturday morning that is what I do! Still if I cant enjoy the movie, I dont know why! No offence meant towards Zack Snyder - '300' is one of the BEST movies ever. And I am seriously looking forward to his rumored Superman movie. That is the reason why I want to enjoy this one - but cant!!!

But I have had the same experience with a few other movies in the past. And there seems to be a pattern. I was never able to watch any of the Narnia movies. Honestly I tried, tried hard after my sister was raving about it. Still I just could not. Never found it interesting! I just saw the FIRST Harry Potter movie because one of my friends literally was breathing down my neck making me read it. I did not enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean except for of course Johnny Depp. I never even gave the LOTR a try! I could not even stand the commercials! I remember going to the theaters to watch this movie - Pan's Labryrinth. While every one of my friends liked it, I could not stay awake for more than 20 minutes through the movie. Same thing - Till this day I have not been able to stay awake watching ANY of the Tim Burton movies!

Is it just that I do not like some sort of animated movies? NO!!! I love Shrek and the Ice Age and almost every Pixar movie. The Incredibles was really incredible. On the same day that I could not bear to watch the Legend of Guardians, I watched Alpha and Omega and found it SO VERY ENJOYABLE! The week before I saw Despicable Me which I found to be fantastic! Also by being a BIG COMIC BOOK buff, I enjoyed the Warner Brother creation of Batman, Superman and the Justice League and keep watching them over and over again. I liked the way they made Batman, my favorite superhero - especially with all the dark theme and cold voice and the stylish way in which he keeps vanishing like a ghost. I think that was what Christopher Nolan took off from in his amazing Batman Returns and Dark Knight.

So the bottomline is this, instead of trying to research why I did not enjoy some of the movies, I just have them with me, because at some point I might be able to see what others see - the class in all those movies. I am sure they would be averaging above 7 or 8 on IMDb. Its just a matter of time before I start loving them...Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-47612028404720906052011-01-01T17:54:00.000-08:002011-01-01T17:54:31.673-08:00My Favorite Ad Quotes - Progressive - Flo with the Mumbo Jumbo Old ManI usually post my favorite movie quotes, but this one I could not resist because I love this ad and never miss to see it. Everytime I find it as funny as ever:
All the gibberish and total old folk talk. Hilarious!

Dont want to deal with a lot of flibitty flab or mumbo jumbo. No Gobbledygook?
Do I still get all the Dagnabbit coverage I need?
This thing is Okey McSmokey Skiddley Doo!
Diggity
But finally, Flo wins it with her CUTE - "Oh....Still not sure...."
And I have watched it on almost everytime it was played again. I dont know how I never came across this classic movie earlier. It is a brilliant comedy and Joe Pesci is fantastic and so is the ENTIRE cast. Seriously - its extremely rare to find a movie in which EVERY single character big or small, performing this well.

Just watch this scene, notice the judge, the members of jury, the witnesses, the defendants as the defense counsellor spews his opening statement. Hilarious!!!

After Joe Pesci, if I was asked to pick the next best funniest character in the movie, I would blindly choose the Judge played by Fred Gwynne. Every single line of his dialog, however simple it may be, he delivers it in such an enjoyable manner. Just watch him deliver this simple line - "Counsellor... your statement sir."

I enjoy movies with courtroom scenes. Most of the movies I have in this blog would be mainly because of that. BUT a movie where the courtroom itself is made the stage for all the humor - WOW! The movie is every bit as intelligent as funny it is.Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-56495803263873667552010-12-26T08:51:00.000-08:002010-12-26T08:51:03.202-08:00My Favorite Movie Quotes - Billy MadisonThis is a very inspiring movie - inspiring you to be crazy and do insanely humurous things. And needless to say - full of funny dialog and goofy quotes.
Adam Sandler is funny as ever BUT somehow the Principal gets the BEST funniest dialog of the movie!

In the climax where Billy is asked to talk about Industrial Revolution, he talks about some bullshit story about a puppy that gets lost in the woods and tries to relate that with how the Industry is the puppy and how it got lost... An AWESTRUCK principal says this.. probably the most hilarious quote of all time cinema:

Principal: Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
It shamelessly begs, borrows AND steals from almost every alien movie made so far. Even the music lacks originality. Just like most of the others, I watched it ONLY to see the CGI and that is All that I got. So I cant complain about that. But I had lowered my expectations, thats why.

Kids who do not care about the script or the story or the class and just want to watch some gleaming graphics and some gruesome alien fighting would probably watch this movie.

Too many technically incorrect g;itches and potholes in the script. And totally uninteresting story telling. This movie really sucks bigtime. In the climax they showed some signs of continuing this into a sequel! If that is true it is only the height of audacity!Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-49404662412888234482010-12-25T09:36:00.000-08:002010-12-25T10:30:33.542-08:002010 Movies - My Movie WeekendIt was a busy year all together and I was not able to watch many of the movies as I would have actually wished to, especially in the latter half of the year.
Seriously…I feel like there is this guy inside me who meticulously weaves all these vivid illusions that feel so real and authentic.

If one could compile all the dreams I have had, we could make a hundred movies on almost all genres. More than just the number of dreams, it is the sense of exactness and the attention to detail given by this guy inside me.

I decided to write about it and went on to create a brand new blog devoting it entirely for some of the strangest, funniest, erotic, horrific and mostly nonsensical dreams I have had.

While setting I up I wanted to use a nice looking template. I had to spend quite some time to get that up and working. So much so that I think I should post a note on my technical blog about it.

But anyways, please do visit my new blog extension at:
http://dreamrecalls.blogspot.com/Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-25563688492741069782009-05-27T02:29:00.000-07:002009-05-27T02:34:26.099-07:00My Favorite Movie Quotes - Johnny EnglishMovie: Johnny English

A movie that made me LMAO. I usually like this genre of movies, even the bloody gory ones like Quentin Tarantino’s “Hostel” or the “Saw” pentalogy (btw, Saw VI is coming up later this year, Yay!!).

But 1408 is undoubtedly the best. There is not a single scene that shows any real zombie or spooky creatures or screaming mutants. It is entirely psychological; people who enter into this room get delusional and start hallucinating.

Samuel Jackson does a splendid job of laying the ground work for a great dare devil ride – that is the rest of the movie. I personally could easily relate myself with John Cusack’s character. Everything that is shown in the movie would neatly fall in place.

The reaction of a character to a given situation – the way they talk and the way they respond is what makes a good script stand outside from the rest, and this is one such movie where the script was perfectly written.

One of the best photography in movies of this type, it does not get too dark nor too bright; just the right amount of light that sets the mood of the movie throughout.

Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-25817429670389034472009-05-26T03:54:00.001-07:002009-05-27T00:48:13.994-07:00My Favorite Movie Quotes - Mr.DeedsThe one thing I enjoy the most by watching a movie is the dialogs in it. Some of them are so funny or too powerful that you can never forget it. So I decided to start a string where I would post some of the most memorable quotes which I enjoyed.

To start with a really really funny one –

“The hideousness of that foot would haunt my dreams forever”
– Emilio Lopez (John Turturro) from the movie Mr.Deeds referring to the “wickedly” frostbitten right foot of Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler)

Absolutely hilarious! I had the movie paused, laughed, and rewound it again and again laughing at this scene.Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-47253382725829534642009-05-20T22:06:00.000-07:002009-05-20T22:11:32.018-07:00Religulous
It is a documentary movie all right, but it did not bore me with some glum topic like Global Warming or some alleged conspiracy. It talks about God, Religion, Faith and Government - about the tacit idiocy of the politicians who govern the country in the name of God.

Bill Maher mercilessly ridicules almost every major religion – pointing out the incoherent beliefs that form as a base for most decisions made by people. He questions a vast bunch of such people about things that they deeply believe in and asks them questions which, an ordinary person like me would think twice or thrice and would finally decide not to ask.

His sarcasm would have certainly hurt a lot of people. It is like some of the arguments I have with my Mom, where she would simply stand up and leave, calling my all my opinions as blasphemy.

There are so many things in every religion that have not been proven – things which I am sure can never be proved, ever. I personally believe that history is nothing but a story being told. Story told by humans - of what they saw, heard or believed. We can see in our day to day life how different incidents are told in many different ways, how rumors and gossips spread. Given this fact, how can anyone be positively sure that every thing given in the religious books happened the same exact way? I would like to quote a line from the movie – The Man from Earth – “The truth is very very simple”.

After all, these religious books were written by humans. I have witnessed so many people who tend to exaggerate and over glorify a simple incident, probably to gain attention or maybe to make themselves feel special or important. This is normal human tendency.

Most of these works, which spans across centuries and contain many incidents which cannot be reasoned with logic, could have been such things. It is totally the freedom of an individual to believe whatever he/she wants. But when the magnitude of such beliefs decides the way the government functions, that’s a problem.

If you are a fair-minded person, open to discuss your faith or absence of it, without any prejudice, you would enjoy this movie.Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-6794014239460359792009-05-19T01:40:00.000-07:002009-05-19T01:49:29.570-07:00Last Chance Harvey
A really pleasant romantic movie. When almost everything and everyone you knew lets you down, even when you are old, even when you feel guilty of your past – still you can fight and win any challenge that life has to offer. Hoffman plays a man who had abandoned his family for his profession but never reached the heights he anticipated in it either.

He is in the verge of losing his job, his ex-wife and his daughter are really not so proud of him. His daughter wants her step dad to give her on her wedding. Hoffman has reached the rock bottom of his life, and looks completely belittled. But he learns to adapt and work on it and is pulled into the life of a woman whom he met at the airport.

Dustin Hoffman really carries the movie all by himself. That being said, the rest of the cast have done a very decent job too. A smooth script sprinkled with some naturally funny dialogs, colorful photography and mild music, this is the kind of movie which, at the end, leaves you with a big smile and your heart filled with a lot of pleasantness.Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-90728378045150871012009-05-02T20:23:00.000-07:002009-05-27T18:42:36.836-07:0012 Angry Men - My All Time Favorites #2

A timeless classic - the kind of movie which has a powerful message. Sidney Lumet's debut movie. Probably Henry Fonda and Lee J Cobb's greatest performances. Almost the entire film takes place in the juror room. 12 ordinary people coming from different backgrounds having different interests need to decide on the fate of a teenage boy from the slum, accused of murdering his abusive father.

All of the jury members feel the same disregard towards the boy as the lawyers who defended him did. All but one, Henry Fonda who reminds the others that they are deciding the fate of a young man who is just a step away from capital punishment. Even if there was a speck of reasonable doubt available, it should be given in favor of the boy.

He slowly gains the support of a few other members and the case is actually trialed in the jury room. Witnesses and their sanctity is discussed in detail, despite the displeasure of a few. One of them has other important things like a baseball game to attend to. Another one is prejudiced inside out. Lee J Cobb plays a father who is hurting over the betrayal of his son and feels the same against the boy now in trial.

The movie never really proves the innocence of the kid. But only proves that there is enough room for doubt. It proves that the members of the jury have their own personal likes and dislikes that made them take their decision on the case.

With some great intelligent dialogs the movie moves at a really good pace and in a very involving manner. The greatest thing about the screenplay is it would try to cover everything that would come up in your mind. A real classic and a great movie

Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-67923233874199481182009-05-01T20:14:00.000-07:002009-05-26T07:08:54.799-07:00Philadelphia - My All Time Favorites #1
I got so bored watching some of the more recently released movies that I thought it is not even worth mentioning them in my space here. I don’t think anyone else could have performed the role better than Tom Hanks. This is the movie which made me a big fan of Denzel Washington.

Excellent screenplay - especially the transformation of Denzel that makes him look at the objective fact that a law has been broken despite all his personal opinions about homosexuals.

The movie is actually built on him - an average man, who cannot and does not, want to see or know, how gay people happen to be what they are. A homosexual who has intercepted the deadly dreaded disease – AIDS.

Great dialogs as it deals with a big bunch of smart ass lawyers – but Denzel outsmarts them all. I had never heard of this movie before but sure was curious enough to see what was so great in this movie.

It was an extremely fast, power-packed action entertainer. Absolutely no
wasting of your time.

Takes you right into the few moments of the life of the characters.
Nice screenplay that quickly tells you about the heroes (again filled
with kick-a$$ action).

Nice chase sequences, sprinkled with some humor in a fast moving action
flick.

The music was apt and surprisingly mild at some places (which made it
sound really good) Overall, I enjoyed the full 80 minutes of it. As
mentioned by another user, do not expect a deep suspenseful plot. Just
watch the movie whiz past you.

I thanked my new friend for introducing me to this movie.Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-84897541624309842822009-01-31T04:15:00.000-08:002009-01-31T16:23:50.649-08:00Gran Torino - Yet another great movie from Dirty Harry!

After watching Million Dollar Baby and quite a few other Clint Eastwood movies, I went with the expectation of a sad finish. Probably that took away the surprise element for me. But he himself gave it away in one of the scenes by reading his horoscope predictions. So let me say that maybe I already knew the climax.

But this movie was so enjoyable just because of Clint Eastwood and some good supporting cast. His energy level simply surprises me! Truly a living legend he is. Amazing acting and at the same time charmingly funny. He growls like a scruffy dog when he gets angry but he is a good guy. Ahney Her is so pretty and does a very good job.

Yet another great movie from our beloved Dirty Harry!Karthik Padmanabhanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00736370704129815448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-59016007313855032.post-74664490913159136992009-01-31T03:52:00.000-08:002009-01-31T16:25:33.366-08:00The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - Amazing! Most Powerful movie seen in recent times
I recently have been watching a lot of war movies and before I entered to watch this movie, I was like - "Oh no not another war history movie!".

But things just turned the other way around in just a few minutes into the movie. I still don't know anything about the director or the crew but this movie shoulders with Spielberg's masterpiece - "Schindler's List". All that, without visually showing any violence.

This movie has got such power! So well written, with very little dialog - but very effective. The holocaust as seen by an innocent eight year old kid, who is confused from what he hears and sees around. Every bit of this movie right from the beginning keeps adding up to a truly stunning climax. The characters have been so well enacted and shows different kinds of people with different views about the War and the tactics. People who disapprove of it, a small girl who blindly begins to patronize and a soldier who is torn apart between his family and reputation. This gives the story the essence of reality.

The casting is fantastic be it the Mother of Bruno, the Jewish Doctor, Bruno himself and especially Schmuel.
